I never realized how hurt Cas looks when Dean says that. Fuck.

This is really not okay.

At this moment in time for Cas, everything has gone to shit. He can’t save the world. He’s hanging out, feeling lost, clinging to what’s left of Dean.  Clinging to what’s left of his relationship with Dean.
Because at this  point in time, he and Dean have already been together and broken up.  They were happy for a stitch in time, but Dean will sacrifice everything he is and everything he wants, for Sam.  And that includes what he has with Cas.  So they broke.  Too many angry words and too much disappointment. Sure, once in a while, when Dean is hidden away and it’s been a bad day, Cas will go to him and they’ll get lost for a while.  But there is no happiness there. 

When past Dean turns up, Cas probably didn’t realise it, but he felt hope. He saw the Dean that he remembered and felt that hitch in his chest. Felt the desire to try again and he tried to gauge how this Dean would react.

The look he gives right there though is that hope fizzling away.  Because he knows that his Dean is lost to him, and in that moment, with those words, he realises that this Dean isn’t there yet.
